International Healthcare and Tropical Diseases Residency

The International Healthcare and Tropical Disease residency in the Netherlands is unique in the world. After graduating from basic medical education, this training prepares participants for a job as a ‘tropical medicine’ in a developing country or within International Health organizations . In September 2012, the training was KNMG acknowledged. The training program now also contains an internship abroad of 6 months to better prepare the future specialists! The training consists of two years of clinical placements in MD partnerships with “tropical experience” in a number of accredited Dutch hospitals in the area of surgery and obstetrics /gynecology and pediatrics. During these periods, the physician residents attend study days where selected topics are taught relating to pediatrics, dermatology, ophthalmology, AIDS and HIV / TB, gynecology and obstetrics.

In addition, participants have to follow the Dutch Tropical Course (NTC) at KIT in Amsterdam. Participants of the NTC are being prepared to implement curative care, administration and management of a rural hospital, management of district health services and research. The NTC is organized by a consortium of research institutes, comprising: the University of Amsterdam, the VU University Amsterdam and the Royal Institute for the Tropics.

Information about the “tropics training ‘can be obtained from the secretary’s office of the COTG. The secretary’s office takes care of registration and it keeps track of vacancies. The secretary’s office is also responsible for the registration and organization of study days. Read more: tropenopleiding.nl
